Unity of Values (part two) March 2, 2023 Read Unity of Values (Part One)
“You can please some of the
people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the
time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
John Lydgate (1370-1451)
This writer admits it
is impossible to imagine how complex and difficult it is to oversee and
manage a nation.
It is impossible to
satisfy all the citizens of a nation, each of whom have their own ideas,
opinions, and passions. As
Lydgate wrote 100% satisfaction is very elusive and possibly impossible
unless the people affected share an overarching commitment to a common
ideal.
An overarching bond
and loyalty can be a spiritual foundation, a monarch or an inviolable
agreement such as a constitution, Each of these enables people to set
aside their individual preferences for a sense of the common well-being.
Contributors to this
impossible task are advancements in technology, education,
communication, true and false information sharing, the elevation of
independent thought and rights as well as the increased ‘me first’
attitude infecting individuals, communities, societies, and nations
around the world.
Because of these
advancements people around the planet are beginning to recognize that
the current systems of social management are not working and the burdens
of economics, climate change, deterioration of social values, etc., are
making life in general more difficult for everyone.
The question that thinking people
soon will be asking, is how much of this deterioration be tolerated? How
long until human civilization as we know it begins to unravel?
Even more frightening is what
will human society be like if the current safeguards, as fragile and
inadequate as they are, dissolve completely.
Regardless of where
you live it is not difficult to see examples of this deterioration and
not be affected by its influence throughout human civilization.
But wait! There is
hope.
Truthfully there is
only one answer to that question … ‘Us’. The community of all the people
of the world, the collective ‘US’.
That is the only influential group that can effectively bring
about a global change.
The answer to that
question is a little harder to formulate but since it is our job to
pontificate, we will try.
‘The people of a
nation get the government they deserve!’. It is true. A government
reflects the general attitude of its citizens.
This is a difficult
concept to accept, especially for individuals living under unpleasant
regimes. But if we drill deeper into the reasons for this, we propose
that the unpleasant regimes took advantage of confusion, conflict,
corruption or apathy within a nation where the people had elected
representatives with diverse and uncompromising points of view or
carelessly accepted at face value what corrupt politicians were telling
them regarding solutions to short term problems or allowed aggressive
leaders to usurp weak government officials.
Unity is a powerful
force. When people are unified things are accomplished. When they are
unified around a set of values that benefit the common well-being the
outcomes include the following: health, happiness, prosperity, and a
sense of security. Within
the boundaries of a unified set of values the individual may not get
everything they want, BUT they can take comfort that they and everyone
else will benefit to some degree and that tensions will ease and methods
of resolving other issues can be resolved to some degree of mutual
benefit thru a unified set of values.
The question is,
where can an individual find a common set of values that will be
acceptable to all people.
The answer to that is
nowhere! A person can search the whole earth and not find an answer
acceptable to everyone.
So what is an
individual to do?
Perhaps the answer is
to find a source that belongs to no one individual, organization or
nation. A set of values that everyone can abide by for the sake of
unity. A set of values that provides an element of benefit to all
participants. Perhaps not
100% but sufficient benefit to
raise up or resolve some degree of discomfort to all . This of
course requires an element of compromise from everyone affected. Once
there is an agreement some compromise will be required it becomes easier
for the community to formulate a vision of an outcome that will benefit
all. People will coalesce around the objective to be achieved and
contribute time, energy, and resources towards its realization.
Throughout history we
see the major unifying influence was religion that provided this kind of
unity. People adopted the laws and teachings and bonded by its sense of
community. Of course, because of limitations to travel, language, and
human capacity religious influence was very regionalized and loyalties
to traditions developed over years and centuries resulted in conflicts
on boarders or in territorial disputes.
Today, because of our
advancements in mechanics and technology and intellectual capacity, all
the barriers to travel and cultural integration are being removed. What
we have not found is a common set of values acceptable to all people
Therefore quite possibly the answer again as in the past the answer can
be found in religion. Not a
religion of the past but a new forward-looking religion that encompasses
all past religions and can incorporate all past traditions while
providing a comprehensive code of conduct.
imagine if the
leaders of nations around the world could find a common set of values
around which to agree. What would be the result of this common unifying
attitude. Imagine what results the human race could achieve.
Imagine the changes
that would come about if the greater population of the world could raise
its consciousness to view our planet earth as one human community
composed of many unique nations. View the human-race as one race
composed of many unique and diverse cultures each with their specific
needs, languages, boarders, environmental conditions with a fundamental
value that all deserve equal consideration when it comes to global
resources, economics, education and elevated living conditions.
Imagine the advances
we could make as a human race if the competitions currently tearing the
world apart were totally replaced with globalized economics, globalized
resource and environmental management combined with a fundamental
principal of fair trade valuation from source to market as well as an
enforced code of fundamental human rights. Guided and administered by
world leaders first chosen by good character then by capacity working
together with a view of the true station and capacity of human realty.
With this fundamental foundation of global management, Earthly
existence, Science, Education, Space exploration and finally our human
capacity would have no boundaries. End of part two Read previous commentaries regarding other important topics.
