68.5 million and growing. That number is the latest count of displaced
people and refugees in the world today. Of the world's 233 countries only 21 countries have populations greater than that. Ref Wikipedia: Global Populations If the people who make up this segment
of the world population were considered a country they would be the
world's 22nd largest country. The people who make up the governments of the world have been able, up to now, to say it is a serious problem but it is not OUR problem. They have been able to point fingers and claim each refugee or displacement problem has been the result of actions by specific governments, regional conflicts or economic circumstances and as such have been able to shirk reponsibility as members of the global community. Time and their misguided priorities are now expiring and the consequences of short term solutions are catching up with them and by extention all citizens of the world are being impacted. There is no place in the world where the effects this mass migration has not had an impact. What is more frightening than the previous
neglect, is the attitude of governments today who would rather close
the doors and shutter the windows of their country with the vain hope
that the problem will go away. This simple minded and self preserving
thinking will not resolve the issue. Instead it will make the world
a much more dangerous place where travel will be restrictive and limited. Alternative outlook It is said that 'the people get the governments they deserve'. It is also said that the world around us reflects the world (thinking ) within us. Based on those two statements, if they are true and accurate, then it is up to us as individuals to begin to think in a manner that is more world encompassing. To view the peoples of the world, no matter where or under what circumstance they live, as our neighbors and we should concern ourselves for our neighbors well being. With this attitude the people who make up governments will overtime conform to the thinking of the people over whom they govern. By extention if the people see the world as a global community and want that community to be like the neighborhood within which they live, then the people who make up our governments will begin to regard the world as a community and change the courses of action to reflect the will of the people.
