68.5 million and growing.

That number is the latest count of displaced people and refugees in the world today. Ref UNHCR

Of the world's 233 countries only 21 countries have populations greater than that.

Ref Wikipedia: Global Populations

If the people who make up this segment of the world population were considered a country they would be the world's 22nd largest country.
Conveniently the governments of the world have been able to ignore this fact because the displaced and refugee population is scattered throughout our planet.

The people who make up the governments of the world have been able, up to now, to say it is a serious problem but it is not OUR problem.

They have been able to point fingers and claim each refugee or displacement problem has been the result of actions by specific governments, regional conflicts or economic circumstances and as such have been able to shirk reponsibility as members of the global community.

Time and their misguided priorities are now expiring and the consequences of short term solutions are catching up with them and by extention all citizens of the world are being impacted.

There is no place in the world where the effects this mass migration has not had an impact.

What is more frightening than the previous neglect, is the attitude of governments today who would rather close the doors and shutter the windows of their country with the vain hope that the problem will go away. This simple minded and self preserving thinking will not resolve the issue. Instead it will make the world a much more dangerous place where travel will be restrictive and limited.
Even more concerning is when this attitude of "we are OK and not them" permiates our individual thinking our own smaller worlds within the boarders of our own counties grow smaller and travel within our own countries will become more limited and dangerous as governments become more entrenched in their self preserving mindsets.

Alternative outlook
So what is the alternative to this ever constricting type of thinking?
We believe the solution starts with the individual and here is why.
The authority and power and holders of resources lays in the hands of those who make up governments and these people eventually respond to the will of the people over whom they rule. Even within countries where that ruling is done with an iron fist the demise of those rulers is inevitable. Some more quickly than others and change will result.

It is said that 'the people get the governments they deserve'. It is also said that the world around us reflects the world (thinking ) within us.

Based on those two statements, if they are true and accurate, then it is up to us as individuals to begin to think in a manner that is more world encompassing. To view the peoples of the world, no matter where or under what circumstance they live, as our neighbors and we should concern ourselves for our neighbors well being. With this attitude the people who make up governments will overtime conform to the thinking of the people over whom they govern.

By extention if the people see the world as a global community and want that community to be like the neighborhood within which they live, then the people who make up our governments will begin to regard the world as a community and change the courses of action to reflect the will of the people.
